Q & A

Q. What do you think is more important in the manga, the illustrations, or the story?

When I was a student, I thought drawing was the most important thing. I thought the story was secondary. But now I've changed quite a bit. The story comes first, and the drawings are there to help. If the goal is to tell a story, it's like walking with both feet, and the text and the drawings would each be one foot. I think the two need to keep pace together and walk forward one step at a time.

Q. You have an interesting career by starting with a published manga and then moving on to webtoons. Has there been a moment where you thought, "I'm glad I started webtoon"?

In the past when publishing manga, getting older was a big handicap. The readers of <Misaeng>, however, were in their 30s to 50s, and there were many readers my age. Even if I stop trying to gain the interest of teenage readers, I have the belief that I can grow old with my readers. I think it is thanks to this webtoon environment that authors of adult-type works like me have been able to find their place and keep working even now.

Q. <Misaeng> is a work that has comforted and aroused sympathy from many readers who work in offices. What does <Misaeng> mean to you?

<Misaeng> is actually a work that I was forced to do because of a contract. But while I was serializing <Misaeng>, it became more than that. Readers who sympathized with the characters shared their stories and that comforted me and helped me. It's a reflection on living selfishly in one's youth. So, I hoped that through <Misaeng> I could grow into a better person. <Misaeng> is full of messages I'm telling myself.

Q. I am worried because I always seem to come up with similar stories. How can I produce works on a variety of topics?

No author lives with dozens or hundreds of themes and titles unfolding around them. In the past, cartoonists produced hundreds of titles in their lifetimes. They received stories from professional story writers and produced the manuscripts. That's when the most colorful themes started to unfold, but I think that an artist can't unfold countless themes and titles unless they are produced by a professional production studio or the like.
