MASTER STORY

With her powerful vocals coming from her petite frame, Jung-in is best known for her rich and soulful voice.

Since her debut in 2002 when she featured in Leessang's song "Rush", she left a memorable impression with her unique voice and excellent performance in hits such as "I Hate You", "Rainy Season", and "Uphill Road".

According to her, she wasn't very good from the start but she was ready to step up and improve her skills when good opportunities came along thanks to her strengths.  When she sang a new song and felt like she hit the wall, she tried to find her own way to overcome them. It's her perseverance and passion that made her the singer she is today.

"I think it's more important to have your own charisma and your own world than just being good at singing."

She gives advice that comes from her own experiences so that those who doubt themselves stay true to their feelings and develop strengths on their journey to music.

Her ViBLE will give you an opportunity to create your own values that cannot be swayed by what other people think and discover hidden gems within you.

Q & A

Q. How do you choose songs for your album?

In the past, I focused on sounds or genres that I liked personally or songs that I felt comfortable singing. But now I think about lyrics a lot, whether it speaks to me or I can feel it in my heart. It's hard to put into words, but songs that you feel in your heart, songs that are real, these things are important to me.

Q. Is there anything you focus on before going on stage?

When I go on stage, it sounds blurry. So, the monitor is crucial to hear the accompaniment and my voice clearly on stage. I usually set it dry by asking them to remove the reverb. Also, since I can only hear from one ear, it is better to turn it off because I can't hear the monitor on that side of the ear anyways. Especially on stage, unlike when I sing in a recording studio or live, there are many situations where I can't concentrate on my voice due to the conditions of the concert hall, microphone, and monitor settings. So I focus mainly on hearing so that I can pay more attention to the pitch and voice.

Q. Do you have tips for ad-lib?

The purpose of the ad-lib is to bring out the emotion of a song, make other sounds stand out, or make the sound richer when the melody and various chords, notes, and other instruments come together. You can fill a space effectively, have fun with some witty ideas, impress with a great sound, and if the intention is good, you don't have to bend it too much. In fact, ad-lib with multiple notes is good, but you can make a lot of really cool ad-libs with just one note. It is best to focus on my tone, voice, and emotions while practicing with just one note. (Check out the video for the tips for ad-lib practice!)

Q. How can you break out of a slump?

Instead of focusing on your shortcomings, you have to think about what kind of song makes you happy when you sing, what kind of sound is exciting, what makes you feel like yourself, a story that you can sing your heart out, what sound that is in tune with your soul. If you focus on these things, I think it will help you find your voice and realize what kind of songs and stories you want to sing and, this will eventually guide you on the path to learning the necessary techniques and skills.
